Acciona, a Spanish company specializing in sustainable infrastructure solutions, inaugurated the “Light at Home in Palawan” initiative, a project aiming to provide electricity to at least 1,200 households in Barangay Teneguiban, El Nido.
The Acciona.org Foundation partnered with the Ayala Foundation, the Spanish Embassy, and the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation for the project.
The solar home system, initiated as “Lights at Home El Nido,” began with the installation of 100 photovoltaic solar panels in February of the previous year and was officially launched in December.
This initiative addresses the essential need for electricity in remote areas where main grid access is limited, contributing to community development.
Acciona.org Managing Director Jose Gabriel Martin Fernandez emphasized the importance of electricity for a community’s overall development, and the project aligns with the company’s commitment to renewable energy.
The Spanish Embassy and Cooperation expressed their commitment to providing clean energy to off-grid communities, marking a significant step toward a cleaner and more sustainable future. The project aims to improve the quality of life, particularly in education, by providing sufficient lighting for residents in remote barangays.
The Spanish Cooperation Coordinator General Violeta Dominguez Acosta noted that this is the first intervention in Palawan, with plans for future projects focused on energy and sanitation.
Ayala Foundation President Antonio Joselito Lambino expressed pride in being part of the project, emphasizing the foundation’s commitment to community improvement. Following the launch in El Nido, the Acciona.org Foundation is actively exploring opportunities to expand the project to other municipalities in the province.
