is more than just a popular holiday destination for Britons, with approximately 412,040 British currently living as residents in the nation, according to the most recent figures (December 2022). With countless stunning locations across Spain, it might be difficult to decide exactly where to plant your roots. But, according to one expert, there is a “beautiful” city which draws people in thanks to its “amazing beaches” and laid-back lifestyle.

James Smith, from Learn Spanish with James, spent many years living in Spain and has listed the beautiful coastal city of San Sebastián as one of the top recommended places to relocate for Britons who want the hustle and bustle of city life and the beauty of nature all in one. The city and municipality is located in Spain’s mountainous Basque Country, on the beautiful Bay of Biscay and is known for its incredible beaches.

“San Sebastian is an excellent choice for those living the nomad lifestyle, as it offers a perfect balance between bustling city life and awe-inspiring nature with its amazing beaches,” explained James.

Stunning blue waters lap the golden sands at Playa de la Concha and Playa de Ondarreta, both of which are framed by a picturesque bayfront promenade.

Away from the beaches, the cobblestoned old town is also a draw for visitors and residents alike – where you can find a selection of upscale shops and vibrant bars. San Sebastián is also home to several high-end restaurants including Mugaritz, which was named by Condé Nast Traveller as one of the best restaurants in the city.

Known for its challenging avant-garde menu, the restaurant is located in a pitched-roofed farmhouse, with a rustic outdoor dining area perfect for summer evenings.

“The Basque influence on the local cuisine has seen San Sebastian develop a reputation as one of Spain’s culinary capitals – you must try the local steak,” James added.

As well as beaches, San Sebastián is also surrounded by the Igueldo, Urgull and Ulia mountains. Mount Igueldo is the highest in San Sebastián and is one which climbing enthusiasts and adventure-seekers typically take on.

Though not for the faint-hearted, there are hiking trails all along the bay promising some incredible views.

Urgull is slightly smaller, considered more of a hill, with the Sagrado Corazón statue perched on top. If you want pretty views across La Conca Bay, this is a great location.

The cost of living is similar to other cities around the world and largely depends on personal factors. On Quora, a resident of San Sebastián estimated that rent for a one-bedroom apartment in the centre of the city can cost between €900 and €1,500 (approximately £768.81 to £1281.35) while dining out in a mid-range restaurant is likely to cost approximately €20 to €30 (approximately £17 to £25).

The natural surroundings of the city are what draw so many people in, and it is this complimentary mix of urban lifestyle and nature which James said makes the region a must-visit for those looking to set up camp overseas.

“For overall liveability, San Sebastian is almost too perfect,” he said.
