A 28-year-old Spanish travel vlogger was allegedly gangraped in Jharkhand’s Dumka on Friday night after she and her partner stopped in the area for the night while on a biking trip. Four suspects have been arrested in connection with the case.

The woman, who has almost 2 lakh followers on Instagram where she posts snippets from her travels, said in a video message in Spanish: “We are in the hospital, and something happened to us that we wouldn’t wish on anyone. Seven men raped me, and they have beaten us and robbed us, although not many things (were taken) because what they wanted was to rape me. We are in the hospital with the police, it happened tonight in India.”

In the video, the couple also said, “They attacked us, beat us, put a knife to our necks and said they were going to kill us…There were seven people…”

The couple were going towards Bhagalpur via Dumka and, around midnight, put up a tent en route.

“The woman and the man stopped a patrol van around midnight. Initially, the patrolling party did not understand much of the incident because the woman was speaking partly in English and partly in Spanish. They were taken to a nearby health centre,” Dumka Superintendent of Police Pitamber Singh Kherwar said.

“The doctors then informed the police that the woman had been raped. I received a call around 1.30 am and rushed to the spot for verification,” the SP said.

Jharkhand Director General of Police Ajay Kumar Singh told The Indian Express that all seven accused had been identified and that four had been arrested. “The remaining three will be arrested soon,” he said.

Dumka District Civil Surgeon B P Singh said that according to the doctor who treated her, the woman did not have any “apparent injuries”.

Her partner, however, posted on social media; “My mouth is destroyed, but my partner is worse than me. They have hit me with the helmet several times, with a stone on the head, thank goodness she was wearing the jacket and that stops the blows a little.”

The couple are vloggers and entered India via Pakistan in July last year. “Hello India, after almost 5 years travelling the world and more than 150,000 km, the time has come to meet, we have heard a lot about you, for the moment we could see that you are difficult, we will have to adapt quite a lot, but you also have your good side, and I know that you gonna blow us away with it” – this was the first post by the woman when she entered the country.

In October, during her travels, she wrote: “I remember when a few years ago, still travelling in Turkey, we thought when would we arrive in India, we set it as a ‘goal’ and finally here we are.”

In February the couple travelled to Sri Lanka, and her last post before the March 1 incident is from that country.

When contacted, the Spanish embassy declined to comment on the specific case, but said it “remains in permanent contact with Spanish citizens in need, as is the case”.

“The Embassy of Spain continues to liaise actively with the Indian authorities and is very grateful to them for their cooperation,” the embassy said.

Speaking to the media, BJP MP Nishikant Dubey said that “neither Adivasis nor Dalits are safe in Jharkhand”, and “now this has become an international matter that a Spanish woman comes with her husband to India, and it comes to light that she has been gang-raped”.

“I appeal to CM Champai Soren to concentrate on law and order in the state. If posting will take place based on any caste then this sort of incident will occur often,” he said.
