Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse men’s basketball team takes on No. 11 Gonzaga at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday at SimpliFi Arena in Honolulu.

The game will be broadcast on ESPN2.

First half

Syracuse shooting just 8-28 (28.6%) from the field while Gonzaga is 13-47 (48.1%).

Things starting to unravel toward the end of the half for Syracuse. Zags finish the half on a 6-0 run to extend their lead before halftime.

Huff called for a charge which leads to a layup by Mintz.

Syracuse’s woes from downtown continue. The team is shooting 20% from long range.

A steal by Ike leads to a score from Hickman to extend the Bulldogs’ lead to 31-19.

Quadir Copeland fouled shooting a mid-range jumper. He makes one of two free throws.

8:00 remaining: Gonzaga 27, Syracuse 17

Mounir Hima checking in for his first minutes of the season. He’ll be joined by Kyle Cuffe. They replace Mintz and Brown.

It’s Starling, Cuffe, Taylor, Bell and Hima on the court for the Orange.

Syracuse issued a technical foul for subbing in Hima without having him listed in the official scorebook.

Cuffe ends the scoring drought for the Orange. His driving layup is Syracuse’s first score in four minutes. The Orange trail 22-10.

The Orange scores seven to cut the lead at the media timeout.

It’s the usual starters for the Orange: Judah Mintz, JJ Starling, Justin Taylor, Chris Bell and Naheem McLeod.

Pregame

Syracuse is coming off its first loss of the season after falling to No. 7 Tennessee, 73-56 in the opening round of the 2023 Maui Invitational.

The Orange now takes on No. 11 Gonzaga in its second game of the tournament.

Syracuse hung with the much older and physical Volunteers for most of Monday’s game before Tennessee eventually pulled away in the second half.

The Orange were out-rebounded 48-33 against Tennessee and face another challenge in the form of the Bulldogs who have out-rebounded opponents 47.3-31.7 on average this season. Braden Huff and Wyoming transfer Graham Ike lead Gonzaga with 7.0 rebounds per game each. Ike and Huff also lead the Bulldogs in scoring with 16.7 and 16.0 points per game, respectively.

Defense in the post could be the key for Syracuse. The Zags are shooting just 27.4% from 3-point range. Despite such a low percentage from long-range, Gonzaga averages 90.7 points per game thanks to scoring it gets inside the paint.
