Spanish supermarket giant Mercadona has been trending on social media for several days now. X, Instagram, Facebook and TikTok have all got their own versions of the latest trend to hit the shop. However, it is not because of the arrival of a new product on its shelves or anything to do with the prices in the stores. Instead, Mercadona has gone viral because of a video that shows how supermarkets have become a perfect place for finding love.

This is due to a publication on TikTok by the user @yosoyvivylin, who, along with a friend, explained how meeting people in Mercadona has become a thing. “The time to drop into Mercadona is from 7 to 8pm. Here we are, both of us with our shopping done and walking around,” the two women laugh in the video.

Their video has already had hundreds of thousands of views as well as accumulating more than 3,000 comments and 73,000 ‘likes’. In fact, although in the video @yosoyvivylin and her friend take it as a joke, many users have reacted by confirming that many people do go shopping in Mercadona to meet people.

Some even go a little further and show what the signals are when looking to meet people in Mercadona. For example, one sign that you’re hoping to meet someone is to take a pineapple and “put it in your trolley upside down”. Once this is done, you should go to the wine section and if you see another person also with the pineapple there, you should bump into them with the trolley if you like the look of them.

“I can’t take it anymore, who is making this up? I’m imagining bumper cars in the aisles of Mercadona,” comments X user @Palomacuevas13. While others like @SantiLiebanaR posted that “Mercadona should take advantage of this and make a dating app”. This comment is accompanied by an image which reads, ‘Hacendates’, a play on words of the supermarket’s own brand, Hacendado.
